In the summer of 2006 I got some serious engine problems with my bike. The oil pressure suddenly got very low, the oil light didn't go out until 2500rpm. This was at the start of my summer holiday, can't be without bike on my holiday
Hmm, where can this come from. After some investigating and asking around I found out that it probably came from the starter clutch. I opened the cover over the starter clutch and found o hole in the side of it.
The 1052 engine starter clutches are weak and can break, especially with big bore/high compression engines. The best cure for this is to replace it with an starter clutch from the 1127 engine, much stronger design. The starter gear must also be replaced. I hadn't time to look for a 1127 clutch so repaired my old one. I put back the cylindrical metal piece and a small spring that is located behind it. Found the spring in the oil pump screen. And then welded the hole in the cover. It worked like a charm. I also found what has caused the low oil pressure. Some small metal debris had gotten caught in the oil pressure relief valve, causing it to stick open. Cleaned them out and the bike ran like it new again
